Kamloops This Week - Oh, the places they’ll see once free of the four walls

And now, for something different

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Seems I've been writing a few too many columns that have been little more than babbling for some of our readers out here in Kamloops.

There's at least one guy out there who feels I should have the letters N, D and P tattooed to my forehead and finally confess I'm doing everything in my power to get a certain always-runs person here elected to some sort of political position.

Moments like those are when I want to pick up the phone and call this anonymous person (obvious contradiction there, but work with me) and ask him/her if he/she has read anything else of mine in the past year. Like the column saying there is absolutely no one to vote for anymore? That all the political parties are completely out of touch with the regular folks?

And then I'd like to tell this person you would need just two hands -- and not all 10 fingers -- to count the times I have voted for any of the political parties.

In fact, at this point, I have a friend who is a Conservative MP in Ontario (misguided, obviously, but he's an old university friend and I cling to those memories) and at one time counted a former Liberal-turned Senator as another close friend.

But people who comment in the newspaper or on our website, kamloopsthisweek.com, have the right to the final say, so I usually just vent at Melissa Lampman, who has the great misfortune to sit next to me.

It's the way it should be. Editors' notes on letters to newspapers -- the ones that post some sort of 'you're wrong and this is the way it is' comment, are self-indulgent and have no place in journalism.

But keep on posting those comments. It's good to get the feedback and know that at least someone other than my beloved is reading my weekly missive. Just don't think that, because of the opinions I espouse, you actually really know who I am.
